Celebrating Judaism

For Term 2 (2007/8), the Festivals Committee, led by Hong, organised a focus on Judaism. Each year, with great help from Hong and the Religious Education Committee, every class focuses on a particular world religion or thought system and explores the customs, symbols, festivals and religious beliefs that are unique to it.

This year, we explored Judaism. The children learned about the Jewish festival of Light - HANUKKAH - and the significance of the Hanukah, the special candle stick with its eight candle holders. The festival of Passover, with its symbolic foods and ceremonies, was of particular interest. The children were able to taste some of the foods that are traditionally served at the Seder meal. Members of the Jewish community, a mother and son, talked to the children and displayed treasured family possessions that are used for prayer and ritual.

Here are a selection of photographs taken from around the school showing some of the work that the children completed for this project.
