The Green School Committee together with all the pupils and teachers of the school have been working hard on this year's theme of WATER. In March we had a whole school assembly on WATER.

We are hoping to get our 3rd Green Flag this year!

We are water wise at BSP Conserving water is the key!

In September An Taisce wrote reminding us we had to reapply for the renewal of our Green Flag. To do this successfully our school must show that we have maintained our achievements and built on them by expanding our original programme. Our Green School Committee is working hard to achieve our goals and set new targets. A pupils committee from 6th classes to 3rd was elected in September and they are a hardworking and enthusiastic group.

The committee met with Jim Callery who is the Assistant Environmental Awareness Officer for Wicklow County Council who reviewed, and was very pleased with, our current school practices and gave us some guidelines and resources to help us with the WATER  theme which will be our focus as a school this year.

In October we had a very informative talk and video presentation given to all pupils from 3rd & 6th classes by WEEE Ireland who is currently running a schools recycling awareness programme to raise awareness with pupils of the necessity of recycling electric and electronic equipment. They then organised a collection day which gave us the opportunity to participate in recycling waste electrical equipment

We also had a visit from the new Green Schools Educational Development Officer from An Taisce Caterina OSullivan  who will be working closely with Jim Callery reporting to her on each schools progress throughout the programme.

Our focus will continue to be on the following

  1. Litter in the playground.

  1. Recycling paper and plastics.

  1. Composting suitable materials.

  1. Reducing lunchbox packaging.

As we now have a water meter iin the school we are going to monitor our consumption and aim to reduce it.  Classes throughout the school are doing projects and experiments on the various diverse aspects of water in our lives and will develop a greater understanding of water as a global resource; how we use it and why we should conserve it.

Millennium Cone Completion

This project is a sculpture created by Robert McColgan at the invitation of the Principal, Kieran Griffin and was financed through Millennium Project funding. The Cone symbolises child learning and growing, their life marked by ceremonies, celebrations and different life events. The space and form of the Cone recall early Celtic mounding and hollowing. It connects our present with our past and our future.

Official Unveiling of the Millennium Cone by President Mary McAleese 1st October2004

On Friday 1st October 2004 , the school was honoured to have President Mary McAleese come to the school to officially unveil the Millennium Cone.  Though the weather was conspiring against us, a two hour spell of sunshine greeted the President upon her arrival. She was warmly welcomed by the School staff, pupils, parents and members of the local community.
